For another year – Slovenia extends fuel price regulation

Date:

In Slovenia, the price of fuel sold at petrol stations along the motorway network will remain capped for another year. The government passed a regulation on Thursday that maintains the current pricing model.

Accordingly, fuel prices will be determined every two weeks and dealers’ margins will remain fixed. The maximum range for regular petrol remains 0.0794 euros per liter, and for diesel 0.0783 euros, the government said in a statement. Fuel retailers complain that margins are too low and jeopardize their investment plans.

Gas station operators want higher margins
The gas station operators and the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce (TZS) consider price regulation no longer necessary given the current market conditions. In the event that this would be retained, traders would have advocated increasing the maximum margins to European level. According to their information, margins in Slovenia are only a third of the European average.

Prices are determined every two weeks
Since 2022, fuel prices along the highways in Slovenia have been determined biweekly according to a price model based on the development of prices on the world market and the euro-dollar exchange rate. However, at highway gas stations, gas station operators freely determine market prices.
