Birthday surprise for Olaf Scholz: G7 partners sing “Happy Birthday” to the German Chancellor at their summit in Italy. Scholz turns 66 on Friday.
A conciliatory end to a difficult week for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: the heads of state and government of the G7 group and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen celebrated his 66th birthday at the summit in southern Italy. Before the working session on migration, they sang ‘Happy Birthday’ under the leadership of American President Joe Biden.
Scholz, who is accompanied in Italy by his wife Britta Ernst, had already celebrated his birthday with his team on Friday evening and received a cake at midnight.
Aftermath of the European elections
The week did not start particularly well for Scholz with the aftermath of the European elections. With 13.9 percent, his SPD achieved the worst result since it participated in the national elections in Germany under this name. After the G7 conference, the Chancellor will travel to Switzerland on Saturday for the peace summit in Ukraine. He then has to return to Berlin to draw up the federal budget.
