Because negotiations on the collective labor agreement for bicycle couriers have been at a standstill for months, food delivery companies will go on strike again in the coming weeks – this time specifically during the European Football Championship matches.
Protests will take place in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg and Klagenfurt next Monday and on June 21 and 25 – every evening from 5:30 p.m., that is, during the Austria Games. The Vida union announced this on Friday.
The KV negotiations have been at a standstill for months
It is a scandal that there is enough money for UEFA sponsorship, but not for a pay increase for employees, complains Markus Petritsch, vida chairman of the road department, in a press release. The union demands a wage increase of 8.7 percent, the employer’s offer is 5.8 percent.
“When we demand a contribution to the living costs for bicycle couriers, we are not talking about luxury or putting money aside. What we are talking about here is that work should not make you poor and should make a good life possible,” said the Vida trade union.
Always strikes
Negotiations between employer and employee representatives in the sector have been at a standstill for months and there have been repeated strikes. However, many bicycle couriers are not covered by the collective labor agreement at all.
There are approximately 4,500 bicycle couriers in Austria, of which only more than 2,000 are also employed by KV. According to KV, Lieferando in particular employs its employees, while at Foodora almost all messengers are freelancers. Even at Wolt, which is only represented in Vienna, only self-employed people and freelancers work.
