The G7 summit in southern Italy ended on Friday evening. This time, Pope Francis participated for the first time and in his speech called for the careful use of artificial intelligence (AI) (see video above). “It is up to everyone to use them well.”
“And it is up to politicians to create the conditions so that such positive use is possible and fruitful.” Nothing less than human dignity is at stake, the head of the Catholic Church said. AI inspires people because of its possibilities, but also scares people because of its dangers. The Pope has commented on the issue several times in the past and even spoke of a “new barbarism”.
On Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Argentine President Javier Milei took part in the meeting. The G7 group consists of the US, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, France, Italy and Germany. These governments have met annually since the mid-1970s.
Pressure against China
This time, the representatives decided that interest income from frozen Russian assets should be used to pay off a loan worth 50 billion dollars (the equivalent of 47 billion euros). From the end of this year, the money will be used, among other things, for arms purchases, reconstruction and Ukraine’s budget. “Regardless of all the tricks, a robbery is definitely a robbery,” said Russian President Vladimir Putin. This decision “will not go unpunished.”
Another decision concerns the Chinese government, which is no longer allowed to supply Russia with goods that can be used for military purposes. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for further pressure on economic policy, otherwise China would “ignore our demands for a level playing field”. On Wednesday, the Commission announced that it would impose punitive duties on electric cars from China from July 4.
Hamas attack condemned
A final statement condemned Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 and announced the defense of its own democracies. There is manipulation and interference in democratic institutions from other countries.
After the program in southern Italy, the participants will travel to the Ukraine Peace Conference in Switzerland on Saturday.
