A 93-year-old Lower Austrian was hit by a slow train near Mariazell on Saturday morning and fatally injured. He would not have responded to warning signals.
According to the police, the man crossed a level crossing in Sint-Sebastiaan protected by a St. Andrew’s Cross and a stop sign on foot at 11 a.m. on Saturday and did not respond to the driver’s repeated warning signals.
Emergency braking and resuscitation failed
The train, which was traveling from Erlaufsee towards Mariazell, hit the 93-year-old despite an emergency stop. The driver saw the victim and immediately called 911. Attempts at resuscitation by the rescue team could not change this: the man died at the scene of the accident.
