While the football world is looking to Germany for the European Championship, those responsible for Sturm are also turning their attention to the football autumn – when Klagenfurt will attack in the premier class of the Champions League. Before that, Sturm’s director of economics, Thomas Tebbich, has cleared up a number of rumors.
“Kron”:Mr Tebbich, rumors are circulating that UEFA Sturm has mentioned the Graz Merkur Arena, next to the Klagenfurt Arena, as a possible venue for the Champions League. Is that correct?
Thomas Tebbich: We have that, yes. Of course, as Sturm Graz we always try to offer our fans international football in Graz. But if you look at the UEFA handbook for the Champions League, you will quickly see that this does not work in Graz. So everything is clearly heading towards Klagenfurt. The Champions League is UEFA’s flagship product, especially when it comes to TV broadcasts. Everything that concerns the presence of sponsors, press centers, broadcast booths, TV studios and the like cannot be adequately represented in Graz. UEFA would therefore have to make significant cuts, which it does not agree with.
