Who hasn’t experienced it: you fly far away to enjoy a nice holiday – and thanks to jet lag, you just try to control your sleep-wake state during the first few days. Jet lag has much more influence on our body than a layman would expect! Curious? We have done the research for you!
Anyone who has ever flown to Japan, Thailand or Africa, for example, knows that you travel through multiple time zones. And that’s the problem: “Our internal clock cannot change immediately when a time zone changes rapidly, but needs a certain amount of time to do so,” explains sleep-wake researcher Gerhard KLösch from MedUni Vienna, explaining why jet lag occurs in the first place.
Logically, the problem was still unknown before the 20th century: “The technical realization of transmeridian flights created a new form of sleep disorder.”
