More than two weeks before the Islamist Hamas’ massive terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, there were clear warnings from Israeli military intelligence, according to a media report. But these were apparently ignored. The Israeli military is investigating the report.
On September 19, 2023, two weeks before the Hamas attack, a letter circulated within the Gaza Division, the Israeli army unit operating on the Gaza border. In it, soldiers from the prestigious elite intelligence unit 8200 described Hamas’ training to attack military bases and civilian communities, public broadcaster KAN reported.
Superiors did not heed warnings
There were also warnings about plans by the Palestinian terror group to kidnap 200 to 250 Israelis, including women and children. However, the warnings were ignored by superiors. The Gaza Division assumed that in the worst case scenario, several dozen terrorists could enter Israel at three points. An Israeli army spokesman said on Tuesday that they were reviewing the TV report.
A military correspondent from KAN explained: “The security system at the time sought to pacify the Gaza Strip by improving living conditions for the civilian population, granting work permits for Palestinians and lifting restrictions on goods.” The army had concentrated on the barrier on the border with the Gaza Strip, which extends deep into the earth.
“Everything collapsed on October 7,” the correspondent said. Senior members of the Gaza Division apparently responded to the intelligence services’ warnings with disdain. “Nobody banged the table and raised the alarm.”
“I want to cry and curse”
A soldier involved in drafting the document wrote afterwards, in light of the October 7 massacre: “I feel like crying, shouting and cursing.” The commander of the Gaza division had announced his resignation just over a week ago. “On October 7, I failed in the mission of my life to protect the Gaza border area,” wrote Brigadier General Avi Rosenfeld.
In April, the head of military intelligence, Aharon Chaliva, announced his resignation. Israeli Defense Minister Joaw Galant and domestic intelligence chief Ronen Bar also took responsibility for ensuring that the bloody terrorist attack that left more than 1,200 dead and more than 250 kidnapped could take place. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, has not yet taken personal responsibility. Recently, tensions between Israel’s political and military leadership have increased significantly in the debt dispute.
