The Hungarian Christian Democrats are leaving the European People’s Party (EPP). Party leader Zsolt Semjén announced this. The reason is the new TISZA leader Péter Magyar, a former Fidesz official who publicly spoke out against Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in February.
The 43-year-old and his party TISZA received 30 percent of the votes and seven mandates in the EU elections on June 9 (see video above). Before the elections he had refused to go to parliament in person, but now he has changed his mind. Magyar becomes head of the TISZA delegation.
The Christian Democratic KDNP was re-established after the end of communism in 1989 and was represented as a small party in the Hungarian parliament in the 1990s. She had to leave the race after the 1998 elections and since 2006 she has only been on a joint list with Orbán’s Fidesz party. Nevertheless, the country has its own parliamentary group in the national parliament and an EU representative.
The Fidesz party is also no longer a member
Fidesz had already left the EPP in 2021 after protracted disputes and has since been looking for European allies. She recently set her sights on the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, which includes Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia party and the Polish opposition PiS (Law and Justice) party. However, some MPs are said to have threatened to leave if Hungary’s ruling party was accepted.
Orbán is considered by many to be “unrepresentative”. His Russia-friendly policy contributes to this, among other things. EU rule of law proceedings have been ongoing against Hungary for years, but the country will take over the presidency of the EU Council on July 1.
