Lebanon and Kuwait ban blockbuster Barbie from cinemas. The film promotes “homosexuality and gender reassignment” and contradicts “the values of faith and morality” because it undermines the importance of the family, Lebanese Culture Minister Mohammad Mortadahat said on Wednesday.
The ban in Kuwait followed on Thursday to “protect public morals and social traditions,” the state news agency said.
Homosexuality is a criminal offense in Lebanon.
Lebanon was the first Arab country to host Gay Pride Week in 2017 and is widely regarded as more tolerant of homosexuality than other Arab countries. Under the influence of religious organizations such as the radical Islamic Hezbollah, LGBTQ+ community events have been canceled in recent years. Moreover, homosexuality is still a criminal offense in Lebanon.
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the movie “Barbie” sends the famous doll on an adventure into the real world. American director Greta Gerwig’s hit has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide at the box office since its July 21 premiere.
