New prison conditions – Putin opponent now banned from bed in Siberia

Date:

Well-known Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Mursa has been transferred to a cell with difficult conditions in a Siberian penal colony for six months, according to his longtime lawyer.

The formal reason for the punishment was that he removed his hands from his back for a few seconds to put his hat in the prescribed place, Kara-Mursa’s former lawyer Vadim Prokhorov wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

Prokhorov, who has now fled Russia, maintains contact with Kara-Mursa. A day earlier, Ilya Yashin, a close comrade of opposition activist Alexei Navalny who died in custody, received the same sentence.

Harassment has a system
Transferring people to such punishment cells is a common form of intimidation by prison authorities, especially against political prisoners. The conditions there are particularly difficult. The cell is very cramped, use of the beds after waking is prohibited, and daily walks in the garden are restricted. In addition, for example, only a short meeting with relatives every six months is allowed – and this only with the permission of the administration.

Kara-Mursa was sentenced to 25 years in camp in April 2023 on charges of treason. Internationally he is considered a political prisoner. For years he has criticized the policies of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and also Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The 42-year-old is in serious health condition after several poison attacks.
