Two cars in ruins, two people seriously injured. A horrific accident in Upper Austria kept a large number of emergency services on their toes on Wednesday evening. The road was dry and visibility was perfect. It is still unclear why the 59-year-old from Raab suddenly drove into oncoming traffic with his two-seater car. The accident happened early on Wednesday evening at 5.25 pm on Brünninger Landesstraße (L 1129) near the town of Niederleithen (municipality of Andorf).
The man driving towards Andorf parked his car on the other side of the road just as two cars passed by. He crashed head-on into the rear of the two cars, which were driven by a 37-year-old woman from Wernstein am Inn.
Both injured in hospital
The accident left both drivers seriously injured and both vehicles totaled. Red Cross rescuers provided first aid in or near the wreckage. The 37-year-old was taken to Ried Hospital and the 59-year-old was flown by rescue helicopter to UKH Linz.
Several hours of use
The affected part of the L 1129 was closed in both directions during the operation. Fire brigade pilots diverted traffic. After police completed the investigation, the vehicles involved in the accident were removed and the road was cleared by around 50 firefighters who attended the scene with ten emergency vehicles, the road was reopened to all traffic at around 7.25pm.
