Eight people were injured in an explosion that took place after midnight at the aluminum factory “srl” in the industrial area of Bolzano. Four of them are apparently in mortal danger, Italian media report.
After the explosion on Friday evening, a fire broke out and several employees were caught in the flames. One of the seriously injured workers was in intensive care in Bolzano, while the others were taken to major burn centers in Verona, Padua and Bavaria.
A sixth employee was less seriously injured. There is currently no information available on the identities of the injured. The cause of the explosion is also not yet known.
“Very serious accident”
The “Aluminium SLR” factory, founded in 1936, was hit. It started producing extruded profiles in 1976 and became the European market leader in this field.
“This is a very serious accident. We are working in close contact with the investigating authorities, civil protection and healthcare to investigate the causes of this accident,” said South Tyrolean Governor Arno Kompatscher (SVP).
