Deadly gun violence has occurred again in the US. At least three people were shot and 10 others were injured Friday in the city of Fordyce, Arkansas.
So the crime scene was a grocery store. It was initially unclear whether the shots were fired inside or in the parking lot in front, as well as the motive behind the crime.
The shooting took place at a convenience store called Mad Butcher in Fordyce, a small town of 3,200 residents about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas. The injured officers and the suspect were expected to survive, Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar told reporters.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she had been notified of the incident. “I am grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic actions to save lives. My prayers are with the victims and everyone affected by this terrible incident.”
Firearms are readily available and widely distributed in the United States. Attacks with many victims regularly shock the country – for example at schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or at major events.
Every eleven minutes someone dies from gun violence
But private fights, police stops, and disputes between criminals and gangs also end in death at a much higher rate than in other countries because so many people in the US carry guns. On average, one person dies from gun violence in the United States about every 11 minutes, according to calculations based on data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
