Ferries turned back – No water supply: tourist stop for Capri

Date:

Tourists have not been allowed to land on the Italian Mediterranean island of Capri, popular among holidaymakers, since Saturday morning. The reason: after a defect in the water pipe that supplies Capri with water from the mainland, the island’s supply collapsed.

Currently, only residents of Capri are allowed to enter the island, according to an ordinance from the mayor.

In this emergency, Capri does not have a water supply that can meet the needs of residents and tourists. Currently, water supply is still guaranteed in most parts of the island in the Gulf of Naples. However, this only comes from local water reservoirs, which are in danger of becoming empty without supply from the mainland.

Long queues at ports
This situation would be further aggravated by the daily influx of thousands of tourists, the order said. Isolated areas in western Capri have run out of water.

The halt in tourist arrivals had immediate consequences at mainland ports. According to the mayor’s decision, ticket sales for the ferries were stopped, Ansa news agency reported. Ships that had already left for Capri were ordered by the authorities to return. Long lines formed at the ticket counters in Naples and Sorrento.

Fault in the main water pipe
On Thursday there was a fault in the main water pipe in the municipality of Castellammare di Stabia in the southern Italian region of Campania. The line serves Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula.

The repair work was completed as planned, but technical problems occurred again, according to water supplier Gori. As a result, the water supply remains interrupted. Work continues to resolve the problems and restore supply.
