So many animals owe their lives to the stork station in Tillmitsch in Styria. It opens its doors on Sunday, behind it we can see what is being done!
“Felix”, “Annalena”, “Emil” and “Hans” sit in the nest with their typical stork bent legs, like to sniff chicken meat and occasionally make quiet “cooing” sounds. They do that when they feel comfortable. And that’s what they do. Because they survived.
Ten little Adebares who would have died without Helmut Rosenthaler; He even took one out of the egg himself because the shell was too hard for the little baby.
And every life is the greatest joy for the Styrians – even after 30 years in which the now 81-year-old took care of the stork station, during which he saved hundreds of protégés.
This year there is a record number of young animals with him and his great team – because unfortunately this is also a terrible year for the rattling folk figures. “Almost half of all babies died,” said the affected expert.
The heavy storms were the cause of this. “At a certain point, parents simply no longer manage to keep their little ones warm and dry. Many also drown because the eagle’s nest is like a hollow.’ Some babies have lost their parents. Due to shots or poison from animal abusers, due to traffic accidents, broken necks on house walls. Or they starved because there wasn’t enough food to be found: the Storch family needs 300 pounds of food – mice, snakes and beetles are on the menu – until the young are out of the nest.
The storks’ nests are protected
In Rein (GU) the helpless little ones were so violently attacked by other storks that one was killed; Rosenthaler and his team managed to recover the second. “Christopher” lives!
Rosenthaler has already been out dozens of times this year, also to repair horses and place new ones. He emphasizes that no one should remove one. Only in exceptional cases with permission – and only after a new one has been installed in the immediate vicinity.
A nest can weigh up to 500 kilos. One of them is on the roof of the station – and dad “Toni” and mom “Pauline” proudly pose with their babies. Since this year there has been a camera – and it broadcasts the images worldwide. With enormous success! There have been 21,700 hits since the end of May. After Austria and Germany, it is the Americans who get to know the beautiful community of Tillmitsch from the perspective of a stork. Rosentaler: “I was touched by it. Because the great interest shows that we are returning to nature.” The town should be proud of this station – even if parts of the hunting community unfortunately don’t see it that way.
Today – after yesterday, again with many people – the open day takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tillmitsch, Dorfstraße 104. Information: der-storchen Vater.com. Donations are urgently needed: AT98 3820 6000 0003 7226
