Feminists have daubed the Spanish Steps in the heart of Rome with red paint. The movement ‘Bruciamo tutto’ (‘We burn everything’) protested against femicide. Protesters raised banners and handed out pamphlets with the names of women killed in Italy in recent months.
The police intervened and recorded the personal details of the demonstrators. Employees of the supervisor were called to clean the stairs and assess any damage. The paint was easy to remove. The outdoor staircase by architect Francesco De Sanctis from the 18th century is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Feminists fear changes in abortion laws
“We organized this action to make society aware of a problem that can no longer be ignored,” the activists emphasized.
Giorgia Meloni’s government is accused of cutting funding for anti-violence centers by 70 percent and plans to make restrictive changes to the abortion law in force since 1978. According to the activists, the government is ‘patriarchal and macho’.
