You don’t see something like that every day! Lubna Jaffery, minister in Norway, pulled the trigger on the open podium. But there is a serious background behind the action.
On Tuesday evening, the Norwegian Minister of Culture and Equality visited the talk show “Skeiv Preik”, which is part of Oslo Pride. The 44-year-old received the ‘Gay Mom 2024’ award
Thunderous applause
The politician proudly posed after the show with a bright pink bow and the gold inscription “Gay Mom”. As a bonus, the politician then dropped her clothes. Jaffery was wearing only two nipple covers under her top. The response in the room was overwhelming; she was received with thunderous applause.
“Promoter of gays”
“I am very grateful to have been named Gay Mom, the most important patron of queer people, at this year’s Oslo Pride. This is a great honor,” Jaffery wrote in a text message to the Norwegian online newspaper Nettavisen. As a strong supporter of queers, she believes it is important that queers feel safe and free. “This was a small contribution,” Jaffery said.
To explain: ‘Queer’ is a collective term for anyone who does not feel part of the ‘heteronormative’ majority society in terms of sexual orientation or sexual identity. For example, these could be people who are lesbian, gay, bi, transgender, intersex, genderqueer or non-binary.
The term ‘gay mom’ originally comes from the American language and describes women who spend a lot of time in the gay scene or are committed to it.
“If you want to earn such an award, you have to offer yourself and not take yourself so seriously,” says Jaffery, who served as her country’s minister of culture and equality for a year.
Positive reactions
Joakim Aadland, head of Pride, told the Dagbladet newspaper: “I think it’s great that we have a minister who goes ‘all in’ and is not afraid to put himself in the foreground a little. I have never experienced the applause she received in the ten years that we have had Pride. So it’s clear that the audience appreciated Lubna’s stunt.”
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also said it was completely okay that the Minister of Culture decided to show her breasts.
