After the “land under” was reported again in Graz and surroundings since Thursday morning 04:00, a red warning level still applies in other parts of the country at 12:00. In Vorarlberg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Burgenland there are thunderstorms and hail.
As meteorologist Nikolas Zimmer predicted, rain and thunderstorms will occur again in many places on Thursday. The strongest of these are expected to fall in the southern and eastern mountains.
The first roadblocks are already at Graz
On Wednesday, the storms already moved through the southeast. There was also a risk of small-scale flooding and mudslides. In Styria, it started again early on Thursday morning: a large thunderstorm cell moved over the capital of Styria and brought a lot of rain with it. The first road closures are necessary due to flooding.
There is a chance of heavy rain, especially in the west, in the area around Bregenz, Feldkirch, Bludenz and Dornbirn. The Austrian Severe Weather Center also warns of large amounts of rain in Lower Austria and on the border with Styria and Burgenland. The warning level also applies in parts of Tyrol, in Salzburg and Carinthia.
But when Thursday is over, students from Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland in particular can look forward to the start of the midsummer holidays. Because from Friday the heat will steadily increase. Up to 35 degrees are expected on Sunday!
Summer weather has an expiration date
However, the short midsummer weather phase already has an expiration date in the form of a cold front, which will revive the tendency for showers and thunderstorms from the west during Sunday. “While temperatures of up to 34 degrees are expected again at Lake Neusiedler on Sunday, temperatures at Lake Constance will no longer exceed 23 degrees,” says UBIMET meteorologist Roland Reiter.
