A 59-year-old man dug up his ex-wife’s urn while drunk, was filmed, allegedly blackmailed and then turned himself in after telling lies.
The Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office is currently dealing with an extremely strange case. A 59-year-old is said to have drunkenly dug up the urn of his deceased ex-wife at the cemetery in Stockerau.
As if that weren’t enough, blackmail would also play a major role. The man was filmed by an acquaintance (51) during his crime, which allegedly took place in March. He was probably drunk too. According to the Niederösterreichische Nachrichten, the 51-year-old, who is said to have had repeated arguments with the older man in the past, recorded the video so that he could withdraw an assault complaint against him.
Found on the doorstep
But the 59-year-old preferred to go to the police himself. At first he allegedly stated that he had found the urn on his doorstep. Only later did he tell the whole story and do self-reporting. Both men have now been charged with disturbing the peace of the dead, which carries a prison sentence of up to six months. The 51-year-old will also have to answer for coercion.
It is currently unclear why the 59-year-old removed the urn from his ex-wife’s grave. Nothing is yet known about the motive.
