Shortly before the start of the holiday period, the Germans’ favorite island records a new Corona wave. At the same time, a warning comes from star virologist Christian Drosten.
All outdone? This is the name of the first book by the man who served on the German Federal Government’s expert council during the pandemic and carried out central PR work with his award-winning podcast “The Coronavirus Update”: the head of the Institute of Virology at the Berlin Charité, Christian Drosten. Subtitle: An overdue conversation about a pandemic that will not be the last (published this week by Verlag Ullstein).
It seems that not everything is over yet and perhaps the next pandemic is lurking around the next corner.
The peak of the wave is yet to come
In any case, a drastic increase in the number of corona cases is registered on the holiday island of Mallorca before the start of the holiday season. “The disease is currently widespread on the islands – and the trend is increasing,” reports the Spanish Ministry of Health.
Two new variants are said to be influencing the rising number of cases: the new Covid variant ‘KP.2’ and the so-called ‘FliRT’ variant, which is already responsible for 15 percent of the diseases. The peak of the number of infections is still in sight.
And with that the question of what we have learned from the health disaster that has kept the world in suspense for two years. In an interview with the German news magazine “Spiegel” Drosten draws a bitter conclusion, at least on a global scale: “We are not better prepared for the next time, but worse prepared.”
His colleague, virologist Hendrick Streeck, will also publish an assessment of the pandemic with similar assessments in September.
In Austria, Prof. Florian Krammer from Styria has been head of infectious medicine since March. The internationally renowned expert in vaccine development shuttles between the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York) and MedUni Vienna. This week he was visited by Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel and his wife, who also live in New York.
