A climb on the Untersberg in Salzburg ended fatally. A 36-year-old and his partner went there together on Saturday, but only the woman returned.
At around 12:30, the 36-year-old from Gmunden and his partner climbed the Dopplersteig to the 1,800-meter-high Untersberg near Salzburg. The pair split up at the upper rosette and the man wanted to climb the eastern ridge to the summit.
Mortally injured
But at the first crucial point, for unknown reasons, he fell into a steep rocky gully. The climber was so badly injured that he died at the scene of the accident and had to be rescued by the police helicopter and flown into the valley. His shocked partner had to be treated by the crisis intervention team.
