Witness saved farmer’s wife – ‘Fight to the death against aggressive cow’

Date:

A mother cow, apparently wanting to protect her calf, knocked over a farmer’s wife several times in a field in Kirchdorf (Tyrol) and would not let her go. One witness reacted with incredible courage; a cracked fence post ultimately saved the day.

Because of the heat, the farmer wanted to take the calf to the cool stable at lunchtime. The mother cow apparently took this as a threat, rammed the woman with her head, jumped over her and started pushing further. The helpless victim crouched on the ground.

Cries for help went unheard
The only witness was Monika Steiner, but initially no one heard her cries for help. It was immediately clear to her: “If I don’t intervene here, the farmer’s wife could die before my eyes!” The only tangible “weapon” for miles around: poles of an electric fence that contained electricity, as the farmer said later. “I didn’t even notice, I was unwinding the tapes from the insulators while the attacks of the cow next to me continued. And then just broke off the thick fence post. In seconds like these you develop powers that you would not otherwise have.”

With the loosened post and the blows, the mother of three children was able to keep the cow away from the farmer’s wife. Shortly afterwards, a hunter drove by, took his stick from the car and also kept the aggressive cow at bay.

Thanks to “my lifesaver”
The farmer’s wife then crawled out of the danger zone; she had survived the nightmarish attacks in the fetal position. “Everything hurts and I have bruises, including my head – but so far I’m doing well,” she reported, describing Steiner as “my lifesaver.” Their lesson: “If you have an appropriate object in your hand, you must have the confidence to act.”
