Thunderstorms were predicted – and they came: but some people were not deterred by the weather forecast. This is exactly what became fatal for a total of six climbers in Kramsach in the Tyrolean lowlands on Sunday. They had to be rescued from a rock face.
On Sunday afternoon, a 34-year-old local wanted to conquer the Reintalersee via ferrata in Kramsach on his own. During the climb, it suddenly started raining heavily around 16:45 – a thunderstorm was approaching!
Climber couldn’t get any further
“The climber, who was between positions 4 and 5, felt unable to climb any further,” the police said. The 34-year-old made an emergency call. He was eventually rescued from the wall by the Kramsach mountain rescue service and abseiled into the valley.
Group of five met
But that wasn’t enough: at this point there was also a group of five people from the Czech Republic on the via ferrata. “This was accidentally encountered by the mountain rescuers during the rescue of the Austrian,” the researchers continued.
The five alpinists were also unable to progress any further and had to be rescued by the emergency services along the via ferrata. They were then escorted into the valley by mountain rescuers. A blessing in disguise: all six rescued climbers were unharmed.
