An elderly woman from Villach was in great danger because of wrong behavior. In the event of a basement fire, the elderly woman opened the door of her apartment and was suddenly surrounded by clouds of smoke.
When the voluntary fire brigade of Perau and Villach was called to a fire in a multi-party building in the Wasenboden district on Sunday afternoon, the emergency services were left guessing. “We were called to a basement fire, but smoke was coming from an apartment on the second floor,” said operations manager Harald Geissler of the main fire station in Villach.
“The woman stood in the middle of the smoke”
Firefighters soon noticed an elderly woman calling for help on the second-floor balcony. “The woman was standing in the middle of the smoke,” Geissler said. Some of the forty firefighters made their way to the back of the house where the actual fire was raging to fight it.
Stored with flight hood
“In the front we were able to give the woman an escape hood with ladder. That was a last-minute rescue,” explains the operations manager in an interview with “Krone”: “Because the lady left the door of her apartment open. and the poisonous smoke from the stairwell entered her apartment.”
cause unclear
While the emergency services had the fire in the basement under control, the elderly person was taken out via the stairs by a respiratory protection team and handed over to the Red Cross. Villach’s detectives are now investigating the cause of the fire in the basement.
