Donald Trump is seeking to overturn his conviction in New York after the Supreme Court’s decision on immunity. Just hours after the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump’s lawyers took action and wrote a letter to the judge in charge in New York.
According to reports in the New York Times and CNN, the lawyers have also asked the judge to delay the sentencing, which was scheduled for July 11. Trump’s team cites the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that gives U.S. presidents broad protections from prosecution for official acts while in office.
The move by Trump’s lawyers was expected and likely hopeless, but could at least delay the announcement of the verdict because of subsequent legal action.
Guilty convictions for paying hush money
A few weeks ago, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in the trial of the concealment of hush-money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels in New York. It was the first time in the history of the United States that a former president was convicted of a crime. In the worst case, Trump could face several years in prison.
In another criminal case against the Republican, Trump’s lawyers have asked the Supreme Court to clarify whether former presidents can be prosecuted for actions taken while in office. The Supreme Court ruled Monday that broad immunity applies to official acts of U.S. presidents.
Many questions still remain unanswered
The decision is likely to upend Trump’s election fraud case in Washington and impact a similar case against the 78-year-old in Georgia. Its implications for the Florida trial over the taking of secret government documents are still unclear.
The New York case is different, however, because it largely concerns Trump’s performance as a presidential candidate before the 2016 election. Trump had previously failed to argue that the case undermined his presidency.
