Scary scenes on one of Europe’s most popular holiday islands: Lifeguards on Mallorca narrowly saved five German holidaymakers from drowning. The swimmers apparently had no idea how much danger they were in.
Lifeguards had to rescue German holidaymakers from the water twice on Tuesday, the Mallorcazeitung reported. First, two men and two women between the ages of 40 and 50 swam into the sea at Son Baulo beach in Can Picafort in the east of the island, rescuers said.
There they were caught by a sudden strong current. A total of four lifeguards were able to bring them safely back to shore yesterday.
“…then an accident might have happened”
“The lifeguards were watching the situation all the time. The holidaymakers didn’t even realise they were in trouble. The current was pushing them further and further out to sea. If the lifeguards hadn’t intervened, there could have been an accident,” says Marcos Ruiz of the company responsible, Marsave.
However, the victims escaped with shock. As a precaution, they were given oxygen masks because of their high heart rates, but it was not necessary to alert the rescue team, Ruiz continued.
Sandbank broken and washed into the sea
On the north coast of the island, intervention was again necessary. Another holidaymaker from Germany was rescued on the beach of Sa Canova. There too, the man was swept away by a sudden current, after a sandbank was broken by waves and a lot of water suddenly flowed back towards the open sea.
Fortunately, two lifeguards came to his aid and were able to save him safely despite the strong current – he too escaped the shock. “This is a surfer’s beach and one of the most dangerous places for swimmers in Mallorca,” Ruiz continued. A German holidaymaker died there last year.
