For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the families of the Gaza hostages that the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria could facilitate a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that would allow their release.
The number of Palestinians killed as a result of Israel’s offensive against the Gaza Strip after the October 7, 2023 attacks has risen to more than 44,700 while the number of injured as a result of the bombings already exceeds 106,000, as reported this Sunday by the authorities of the enclave, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).
Gaza’s Ministry of Health said in a statement that “the number of victims of Israeli aggression has reached 44,708 martyrs and 106,050 wounded,” including 44 dead and 74 injured as a result of three massacres of Israeli troops during the last 24 hours.
However, he stated that these figures only include those who reached hospitals as “there are casualties under the rubble And thrown onto the street“, before specifying that current statistics “exclude” northern hospitals due to “communication issues”.
According to Netanyahu, the fall of Assad could facilitate an agreement
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this on Sunday families of Gaza hostages that the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria could facilitate a peace deal file in the Strip that makes their release possible.
Netanyahu has emphasized that Israel’s “determined actions” against Hamas and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, an ally of the overthrown Assad dynasty – which ruled Syria for 54 years – have contributed to regime change in that country.
This was the family members’ first meeting with the Israeli president in more than three months, as confirmed by official Israeli sources.
“The Prime Minister has acknowledged that the hostages will only return through a negotiated agreement and that he is willing to accept a ceasefire to facilitate the return of the hostages,” the Hostage Families Forum statement said.
“We ask regular meetings with the Prime Minister between events. We hope to have news on progress in the coming days,” they added.
