Prosecutors have charged a former U.S. soldier with the murder of a student in Germany 46 years ago. He is accused of treacherously killing the young woman with 14 stab wounds in 1978.
“He is accused of murdering the 18-year-old student to cover up an affair with her,” said a spokesman for the Schweinfurt public prosecutor’s office. The man denies the crime.
Ex-soldier in custody
The now 70-year-old has since been extradited to Germany and is in custody. He was arrested last year in the US state of Nebraska.
According to the prosecution, the then 24-year-old was stationed as a soldier in the American army in Schweinfurt (Lower Franconia). In 1996, the man had already come to the attention of the investigators.
Modern forensic science
Thanks to modern forensic technology, they were later able to assess DNA traces on the victim’s clothing. According to the Public Prosecution Service, these results and witness statements place a heavy burden on the former soldier.
