It should have been a dignified end to the school year, but now it ended fatally. A 16-year-old student from Bremen suddenly dies while traveling to Tuscany with his class. Now there are accusations against the teacher.
Even before he left for the province of Lucca in Italy, the 16-year-old boy complained of a sore throat and headache. Shortly before his death, the 16-year-old boy was also part of a class day trip to the legendary Leaning Tower of Pisa. As the trip progressed, however, his condition worsened.
Despite complaints we went on a day out
As the “Weser-Kurier” reported, the tenth-year student in a special education class at a secondary school in Bremen was in constant contact with his father during the 23-hour journey to Italy. He was also plagued by health problems after his arrival; after a video chat, his sister reported that the boy’s face was red.
The class apparently went on a day trip to Pisa, where the student became noticeably worse. The teacher in charge eventually pulled the ripcord, canceled the trip and informed the parents.
Sister: “His eyes were all swollen”
In the evening, the nurse contacted him again via video chat: “His eyes were almost closed, completely swollen,” she explained to the “Bremer Zeitung”. The next morning, the family received the tragic news: the 16-year-old had died that night.
Now it must become clear why the youngster died and whether the teachers fulfilled their responsibility. “The incident is currently being investigated,” confirmed a spokesman for the Bremen education department. He did not provide further information, referring to the ongoing proceedings. According to the “Weser-Kurier” report, he was accompanied in class by a school assistant due to a perception disorder with a disability of 80 percent.
Family now beside themselves
“The family was supported through the school during this difficult phase. There was regular discussion about what support the family could receive during this difficult time,” a spokesman for the education department in Bremen tried to reassure, also expressing deep concern.
The family is still beside themselves. They blame the teachers for not contacting a doctor in time. Furthermore, the boy was left alone in a camping accommodation despite the complaints. They now even want to consider legal action.
