In the speech ahead of his meeting with King Charles III to formalise the abdication, he stressed that the British people had “sent a clear message”.
Conservative Rishi Sunak announced this on Friday will step down as leader of the defeated Conservative Party British after the heavy defeat his party suffered in the British elections. Sunak will take this step as soon as his successor as party leader is chosen.
In a brief five-minute appearance outside the official residence at Number 10 Downing Street before meeting King Charles III to tender his formal resignation as prime minister, Sunak insisted that the British people had “sent a clear message” and that the end is the “only verdict that matters.”
Accompanied by his wife, Akshata Murty, Sunak heaped praise on Labour leader and election winner Keir Starmer, calling him a “decent politician who I respect”.
Following the performance, the Sunaks headed to Buckingham Palace, where Rishi Sunak formally presented his resignation as prime minister to King Charles III. Following the hearing, the Conservative politician is expected to return to his usual residence in the north of England.
