A former leader of the far-right Proud Boys has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in storming the US Capitol. Ethan Nordean was identified by investigators at trial as the instigator of the violent march on the US Houses of Parliament on January 6, 2021.
Nordean was found guilty of “seditious conspiracy” among other charges. Judge Timothy Kelly of the Federal District Court of Washington has sentenced him to the longest sentence yet by a member of the group, according to the Washington Post. Another violent ‘Proud Boys’ protester who, among other things, smashed a large Capitol window, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday. According to the American media, Dominic Pezzola sang “Trump has won!” when he left the courtroom.
Several long prison terms
Other ‘Proud Boys’ were already sentenced to 17 and 15 years in prison on Thursday. The sentence for the main leader of the right-wing group, Enrique Tarrio, is also scheduled for Tuesday. He was not allowed to travel to Washington because of a ruling shortly before the protests.
On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-voted President Donald Trump stormed the seat of the US Parliament in Washington. Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Trump had previously incited his supporters in a speech with the lie that he had been robbed of a victory by massive electoral fraud.
Five killed in riots
Trump had already refused to clearly condemn the radical right-wing group during the election campaign. In a televised debate with Biden, Trump said, “Proud guys — step back and be ready.” Five people were killed as a result of the riots.
The attack on the heart of American democracy shook the country and made headlines around the world. According to the New York Times, about 1,100 proceedings have been opened against participants in the protest.
