The left front held its ground against the right-wing extremist Rassemblement National. Marine Le Pen’s party failed to win the second round of the French parliamentary elections and is therefore unable to seize power. However, Le Pen spoke on Sunday evening of a “delayed” victory.
“The tide is rising. This time it has not risen high enough, but it continues to rise and that is why our victory has just been postponed,” Le Pen said on TV channel TF1. In fact, the RN may have managed to almost double its seats in parliament.
The right-wing camp also welcomes the “clear defeat” for the government of President Emmanuel Macron, whose prime minister has already announced his resignation.
Is there a risk of total blockage?
However, since none of the electoral alliances has an absolute majority, the Grande Nation is likely to face very unstable times. The three major blocs in the National Assembly could block each other, paralyze the government and plunge the country into a political crisis. The left-green alliance is anything but internally aligned and is in no way connected to Macron – quite the contrary.
