A man in an electric wheelchair threw two firebombs at the Norwegian Royal Castle in Oslo on Monday. The background to the crime is initially completely unclear.
The man initially told an eyewitness he had a bomb, Oslo police said, before throwing two Molotov cocktails at the back of the castle building.
Flames appeared, but were already extinguished. The situation was under control and the man was quickly arrested, according to the police.
Flames in front of a castle door
The background to the crime initially remained completely unclear. Images published by the newspaper “Verdens Gang” showed flames in front of a large castle door and police officers extinguishing them with fire extinguishers. The royal court told broadcaster NRK that it is still unclear how extensive the damage is.
The Royal Castle, where King Harald V and his wife Queen Sonja (both 87) reside, is located in the centre of the Norwegian capital Oslo. It is surrounded by a larger castle park.
