17 years after his conviction for tax evasion, a former brothel king of Salzburg is now starting his prison term. He had voluntarily returned from Brazil, where he had emigrated more than 30 years ago.
A former Salzburg brothel boss is now serving his sentence in Salzburg prison only 17 years after his conviction. In July 2005, the 69-year-old was fined 1.8 million euros and six months in prison for tax evasion. However, he immigrated to Brazil in 1999 and stayed away from the trial. Because he did not serve his sentence, he had to be arrested.
In February 2022, the handcuffs clicked upon entering Austria. According to the prosecutor’s office, the ex-boss of a nightclub in the city of Salzburg would have evaded about six million euros in taxes between the beginning of 1980 and mid-1990. His lawyer explained at the hearing that his client had, in principle, confessed that he was only contesting the amount charged against him.
“Greetings to the tax authorities”
While the judiciary tried to enforce the sentence, the ex-“brothel king” was living free in his adopted country of Brazil. In a television report in 2006, he said “greetings, especially to the tax authorities”.
In the interview, the man said that he has been living in Fortaleza since December 2001 as a businessman and married father of three children. There he buys cars at auctions, has the luxury limousines repaired and then ‘sells them again’. His original plan to build a tourist sex center backfired.
