On Monday morning, around 50 people had to be evacuated from an indoor swimming pool in Raabs an der Thaya (Lower Austria). The reason was a chlorine gas leak.
According to the fire department, two new chlorine gas cylinders were connected and put into operation at the swimming pool in the municipality of Waldviertler at around 5 p.m. When the technician closed the door of the operating room, the gas sensors triggered an alarm. As planned, the Raabs fire department was automatically called in such a case. As a result, experts from the pollutants group were also called.
Leaking chlorine gas cylinder
The guests and employees were evacuated to a shelter, the Waidhofen ad Thaya fire brigade reports. No injuries were reported. After investigating in gas-tight chemical protective suits, the emergency services discovered a leaking chlorine gas bottle.
After an hour the all-clear was given again
This was transported outside and secured with a secondary valve (placed over the cylinder valve to seal it, note). After about an hour, the contaminants experts gave the signal. The swimmers and staff were allowed to leave the shelter.
