Now four patients – two new cases of monkeypox in Austria

Date:

Two more cases of monkeypox have occurred in Austria – one Viennese and one Lower Austrian have been affected, according to the Ministry of Health, who are being treated at the Favoriten clinic in the federal capital, it was said on Monday. Contacts for both patients are being questioned and all associated steps have been taken. There have been four known cases in Austria so far.

The number of cases of monkeypox reported in countries outside Africa since May continues to rise. The WHO reported more than 1,200 cases on Saturday – but referred to the June 8 status. Dozens of other cases have been reported since then in Germany alone. Four people are now ill in Austria.

In Austria, the disease has been notifiable for several weeks. As part of this, two more cases from Vienna and Lower Austria have been reported to authorities in recent days. The international health authorities have also been informed.

Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens): “The occurrence of monkey pox has made us again aware that communicable diseases are a constant threat to our health after Covid-19. Where many people gather and celebrate, the chance of transmission is particularly high .”

In quarantine with a mild gradient
According to the cabinet of Health Councilor Peter Hacker, the Viennese between the ages of 20 and 40 have a mild course of the disease. His general condition is generally good, so he is not being treated in hospital, but is isolated at home. A divorce has already been issued by the health authority. Close contacts were asked, including a professional distance. The newly ill Lower Austrian is also treated in Vienna.

Business in Vienna and Lower Austria
Recently, a 36-year-old from the St. Pölten district had tested positive for the new type of monkeypox virus. It is the first case in Lower Austria. According to the health authorities, the man was probably infected during his vacation.

A 35-year-old Viennese had already been admitted to a clinic in Favoriten at the end of May with suspected monkey pox. The man showed typical symptoms such as a low-grade fever and pimples on his face. Tests then confirmed it was the new virus.

If you suspect that you have pox-like symptoms (usually pustules/lesions on the skin), you should not go to the hospital yourself, it is not necessary at all. Keep calm and call Vienna 1450, which will clarify what needs to be done, as these cases are usually not hospitalized and can also be cured at home, it said.
