The body of a tourist who went missing more than twenty years ago has been found in the Peruvian Andes. The American was buried under an avalanche on the Nevado Huascarán mountain in June 2002.
The avalanche took three people. The first body was found and identified two years ago, but the remains of the third climber have still not been found.
According to police, the second body is that of an American citizen who was discovered at an altitude of 5,200 meters. He still had intact climbing equipment such as boots with crampons, climbing harnesses and safety ropes. A driver’s license was also found, police said.
Highest mountain in the country
At 6,768 meters, Nevado Huascarán is the highest mountain in Peru. The national park of the same name is a popular excursion destination and one of the most important nature reserves in the country.
