A farmer from Upper Austria wanted to protect his corn from weeds and killed five of his neighbor’s sheep. His weed killer was blown by gusts of wind into the adjacent pasture of another farmer, where five ewes died within a month from the effects of the poison.
Gone with the Wind – this is not about a classic from literary history, but about highly toxic pesticides. As has only now become known, a 56-year-old farmer from St. Marienkirchen near Schärding had spread pesticides on his corn field on the morning of May 21.
Wind and law ignored
Although he has a certificate of expertise in spray application, he ignored the strong wind, which sometimes gusted up to 40 km/h, and the provisions of the Soil Protection Act.
Five dead mothers
As a result, the pesticides were transported to a nearby sheep pasture belonging to a 56-year-old farmer. The animals didn’t stand a chance: within a month, five mother animals had died from the effects of the poison.
