A 26-year-old attacked a security guard with a butter knife. The detainee shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ before the attack. So this is also a terrorist process.
“We have an IS and Nazi sympathizer sitting here who makes the work of the prison guards difficult every day!”, the prosecutor describes the accused prisoner in the regional court of Krems. For months, he is said to have repeatedly insulted and assaulted guards. The climax then came in December 2020: the imprisoned Chechen (26) allegedly attacked a guard at Stein Prison with a cutlery knife – accused of attempted murder.
“Allahu Akbar” for the attack
He was to be transferred that day. The reason for this was the aggressive behavior of the suspect. He flooded his cell to make it harder for officers to break in, put on an extra layer of clothing to deter Taser attacks, and sharpened his butter knife. When the task force arrived, it shouted the words “Allahu Akbar” – a rallying cry from IS. After kicking one of the prison guards, he stabbed her twice in the neck.
Prisoner acts out of frustration
“Have you already made plans to act violently against the guards?” asks the judge. The inmate describes his experiences in Stein Prison: He started using drugs, became increasingly aggressive and developed depression. But no one wanted to support him when he was withdrawn. The frustration was great: “You don’t understand it if you haven’t experienced it”, the suspect answers to the judge.
No attempted murder?
According to lawyer Florian Kreiner, there was no attempted murder: “In the end, he is a desperate person.” The 26-year-old has been in prison since 2015. A dismissal was out of the question because of various resistance and escape attempts. A verdict is expected on June 21.
