After the most violent protests since Kenya gained independence from Britain in 1963, President William Ruto is now responding with a complete reshuffle of his government.
The 57-year-old head of state has dismissed all ministers except the foreign minister and the vice president. He took the decision after “reflecting, listening attentively to the words of the Kenyan people and holistically assessing the performance of my cabinet, its achievements and challenges,” the head of state announced at a press conference in the capital Nairobi on Thursday.
The largely peaceful anti-government youth protests turned violent in June after parliament approved a series of tax increases under pressure from the International Monetary Fund. Protesters stormed the parliament complex and set fires. Security forces sometimes used live ammunition against demonstrators. Dozens were killed.
President wants to ‘slay dragons of corruption’
The president also announced that he would “immediately initiate extensive consultations among various sectors and political formations to form a broad-based government.” This government will help him develop “radical programs” to tackle the country’s massive debt burden, increase employment, eliminate government waste and “slay the dragon of corruption.”
