Permanent alert for the emergency services! On Wednesday alone, 3,300 Florianis from 220 fire brigades in Upper Austria had to respond a total of 324 times. And on Friday, thunderstorms are expected again, especially in the Inn, Mühl and Hausruckviertel and in the central area.
On Wednesday, emergency services were called out mainly because of blocked or flooded streets and flooded buildings. The districts of Braunau, Ried and Rohrbach were particularly badly hit. The greatest hail damage also occurred in the west: in Braunau, Schärding and Grieskirchen, agricultural damage amounting to 1.4 million euros was caused, according to Wolfgang Winkler, director of hail insurance for Upper Austria. Around 3,000 hectares of grain, corn, soy, sugar beet and rapeseed crops and grassland were destroyed, some of them en masse.
Where there was a thunderstorm on Friday
“The comrades are already coming to sleep. Long-lasting storms and floods are bad,” explains Martin Burger from Upper Austria. Command of the State Fire Brigade. “After the quiet Thursday, we expect thunderstorms again on Friday evening, but not as heavy as Wednesday,” says Burger.
Meteorologist Christian Ortner of GeoSphere Austria expects thunderstorms from 2 p.m. There may be hail, heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 100 km/h. The districts of Inn, Mühl and Hausruck and the central area are particularly at risk; the danger is less in the south. “The situation will calm down quickly,” says Ortner.
Outlook for the weekend
In the central area, the storms will probably be over around 19:00 on Friday. On Saturday, rain showers are expected, especially in the mountains, and in the afternoon, thunderstorms are also possible in the south. The weather situation will become more stable on Sunday.
