Not even 24 hours after the devastating storms in the Voitsberg area, especially in Krottendorf-Gaisfeld, the alarm is already sounding again! A violent storm front is causing new damage and operations – also in many other parts of Styria.
The State Fire Brigade Association does not currently keep track of the number of operations. Heavy thunderstorms hit large parts of Styria; in Graz too, the sky became pitch black and it rained heavily.
The situation is particularly tense in the Voitsberg district, which was already badly hit on Thursday evening. Parts of the district are considered a disaster area! On Friday, a new civil protection alert was issued for the communities of Edelschrott, Voitsberg, Maria Lankowitz and St. Martin am Wöllmißberg: people should avoid cellars and ideally retreat to higher floors.
A race against time
In the Teigitschgraben (municipality of Krottendorf-Gaisfeld) the storm caused particularly great damage on Thursday. Large blockades have formed that threaten several houses, some of whose residents have been evacuated; others did not want to leave their homes.
During the day, fire brigades fought with great effort to avert the danger – supported by 33 soldiers of the federal army. Water bodies were cleared of washed-up driftwood to prevent the formation of artificial dams.
Car up to its roof in water
Also in the district of Murtal – the second “hotspot” on Thursday – the fire brigade is in action again. This time, according to spokesman Thomas Zeiler, the storm and not the flooding is the biggest problem. Many trees have fallen on roads and the Murtal Expressway (S36) is also affected.
During the day, a spectacular operation had already taken place: in Spielberg, a car got stuck in a motorway underpass – it was under water up to the roof. Divers from the Apfelberg fire brigade secured the car and, together with comrades from Spielberg, pulled it out of the underpass. The operation lasted an hour.
Heavy storms are possible in Styria throughout the evening. Calming is recommended for the night hours.
