China, leader in renewable energy production worldwide

Date:

According to the Global Energy Monitor (GEM), the Asian giant is building twice as much wind and solar capacity as the rest of the world. The renewable capacity being built in the country could be enough to power all of South Korea.

This is evident from the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) report. China is positioned as world leader in the sustainable energy productionof 180 gigawatt (GV) of solar energy And 159 GW wind energy. This total exceeds 339 GW bee infrastructure by 40 GW under construction in the United States.

GEM estimates that in renewable capacity of the Asian giant could be enough for supply all of South Korea, the 14th largest economy in the world.

Between March 2023 and March 2024 China installed more solar power than in the previous three years combined, and more than the rest of the world in 2023.

In addition, China is expected to reach 1,200 GW of installed wind and solar capacity by the end of 2024, six years ahead of government forecasts.

These data emphasize the China’s leading positionat a time when Washington and Brussels have accused Beijing of unfair competition in the renewable energy sector and of “industrial overcapacity” in the production of solar panels.

China has set itself the goal of reaching the peak carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060, implying a transformation of the energy model, which is currently dominated by coal.

According to GEM, China’s reliance on coal means it will need to install even more renewable capacity if it is to meet its emissions reduction targets.
