A burning gas cylinder triggered an operation involving the special police unit Cobra in Fieberbrunn in the Tyrolean lowlands. It turned out to be a celebrity builder: Julian Nagelsmann, coach of the German national football team.
Nagelsmann invested no less than 1.75 million euros in a total of 1,000 m² of land including an old building in Fieberbrunn. It is currently making way for a luxurious new building; construction work is in full swing.
Heavy respiratory protection required
During flame work in the basement, a gas cylinder caught fire on Thursday around 2:30 p.m. “Actually, only the hose was affected,” explains fire chief Hubert Wörgötter. Wearing heavy respiratory protection, he and his comrades carried the cylinder and turned off the gas flow, keeping a close eye on the temperature with a thermal imaging camera.
When it was safe enough, the Floriani disciples took the gas cylinder outside and let it cool further – the operation was effectively over.
The deciding factor: propane gas or acetylene filling?
The main question in such operations: is it filled with propane gas or acetylene? “Acetylene is much more dangerous; the bottle gets hotter and hotter due to chemical reactions,” explains the fire specialist.
“Helicopter transfer with three officers”
The police, who were also alerted, wrongly assumed this more dangerous variant. “There was therefore a suspicion that there could be a risk of explosion,” says police spokesman Stefan Eder. The procedure for such dangerous situations requires the deployment of the Cobra: “This was followed by a helicopter transfer with three officers,” says Harald Gonner, head of the Cobra/West operational command.
In such cases acetylene cylinders are rendered harmless by bombardment because the holes release the pressure. This was no longer necessary here and the excitement was soon over.
