Two EU pilot projects have been launched with Bulgaria and Romania against irregular migration. According to previous statements by EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen, one of these plans is to secure the border between Bulgaria and Turkey with vehicles, cameras, roads and watchtowers.
“Strengthening the external borders through reinforced security measures at the Bulgarian-Turkish border is an important priority,” the EU commission said on Monday evening.
Financed by EU funds
The projects were announced a month ago at an EU summit. At the time it was said that the project would be financed from EU funds, the Bulgarian budget and contributions from the EU countries.
Another project focuses on repatriation
The second pilot project, which started in Romania on Friday, would cover repatriation, border management and international cooperation. It will be implemented with strong operational, technical and financial support from the Commission and key EU agencies such as Europol and Frontex.
Nehammer now wants an EU border fence based on the American model
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) recently attracted attention with an unusual idea. He wants to see a fence similar to the one between the US and Mexico on the EU’s eastern border. “We need effective barriers,” demanded the chancellor. And added: “They have to be very high, they have to be very deep in the ground and they have to be monitored consistently – technically and personnel wise.” Only with this “triad” can illegal migration be contained.
