Major manhunt underway – “A murderous burglar!” ATMs blown up in Lower Austria

Date:

Explosions, shots, homemade bombs? Much remains unclear about what happened in the Lower Austrian town of Drosendorf, with a population of 1,200. But what is clear is that unknown perpetrators attempted to blow up two ATMs in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“It was a bang,” is how an earwitness from Drosendorf, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes the loud bang that initially led him to believe that two cars had collided at high speed. In fact, it was in the town of Waldviertler, near the border with the Czech Republic, that the cash machine at the Raika branch was blown up, which happened at around 4 a.m.

Major cross-border manhunt
The police are investigating at full speed and a large-scale cross-border alarm search has so far been unsuccessful. The perpetrators are believed to have fled across the border. The National Police Directorate (LPD) points out that the investigation is still in its early stages and so far little can be reported with certainty.

The harmless service has secured crime scenes
The defusal service was – as usual with every explosion – on site to ensure that the crime scene group could work safely. In the event of explosions or attempted explosions, the perpetrators can always resort to homemade explosives, which are extremely dangerous at any time.

A stone’s throw away between both ATMs
It is currently believed that the two ATMs in the city were blown up and attempted to be blown up. Between the two ATMs are two streets and a park. That is about 60 meters or a minute walk. The second ATM is located in a Sparkasse branch.

Shots…
There are also reports of gunfire, which the state police headquarters cannot confirm with certainty. However, it is likely that a local resident shot at the perpetrators or their getaway car after the explosion.
