The Israeli military believes that the commander of the Hamas brigade in the town of Khan Yunis, Rafa Salama – considered one of the masterminds of the October 7 massacre in Israel – was killed in an airstrike in the Gaza Strip.
“Using intelligence, the Israeli Air Force targeted and eliminated the commander of the Khan Yunis (Hamas) Brigade, Rafa Salama, near Khan Yunis,” the military said, describing the slain man as a close associate of Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif.
Was responsible for rocket attacks
Since 2016, Salama has commanded the Khan Yunis Brigade (named after the Gaza Strip city of the same name, note). In this capacity, he is said to have been responsible for the rocket attacks that Hamas has launched from Khan Yunis into Israel over the years. Eliminating it would seriously undermine Hamas’ military capabilities, the army said.
The Israeli military has not provided any information on whether the powerful military leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed Deif, was also killed. He was said to have been at Salama’s side when the air force bombed a Hamas compound near Khan Yunis on Saturday.
Hamas denies death of military chief Deif
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently stated that there is still no absolute certainty about Deif’s fate. He was not killed in the attack on Khan Yunis on Saturday, Hamas deputy chief Khalil al-Hayya told Al Jazeera television on Saturday.
