Handcuffs clicked – ATM burglar caught after chase

Date:

Detectives are working at full speed after the break-in on Monday at a Postpartner branch in Draßburg in the Mattersburg district. As reported, a major manhunt was underway on the A2 for hours afterwards. A perpetrator caused an accident as a wrong-way driver. His accomplice initially managed to escape, but was arrested in the Czech Republic.

In Draßburg, the burglars were particularly bold. They had already broken into the construction site on Sunday evening to steal work materials such as a Flex and batteries. The coup was discovered and reported on Sunday afternoon. Less than 24 hours later, the same perpetrators probably returned to the community. They broke into the branch of the postal partner with a rescue package. There, they broke into the cash machine. How much loot was, is still unclear.

Burglars as ghost drivers
An alarm search was carried out on Monday afternoon. In addition to a large contingent of civil servants, a helicopter from the Ministry of the Interior was also present. The burglars drove onto the A2 near Wöllersdorf in Lower Austria. Shortly afterwards, the chase ended in a collision with a police car after the perpetrators drove the wrong way. One of the two suspects was arrested. He is a 35-year-old Austrian. After questioning, he is expected to be taken to Eisenstadt prison. Both vehicles were seriously damaged in the accident and a police officer was injured.

Second perpetrator arrested in Czech Republic
The accomplice managed to escape. He stole a car near the highway. This car was discovered early in the afternoon near Drasenhofen in Lower Austria. After breaking through three roadblocks, the driver raced across the border into the Czech Republic. Because his car was destroyed, he fled on foot.

The escape ended on a company premises, where the wanted perpetrator is believed to have jumped from a roof and suffered serious injuries in the fall. The 47-year-old was arrested thanks to cooperation between Austrian and Czech police. According to the authorities, he is receiving medical treatment in a hospital. “Both suspects are Austrian citizens with a migration background,” the report said.
