On holiday in Croatia – power surge when showering: Austrians (17) dead

Date:

A tragic accident has occurred on the popular Croatian holiday island of Hvar: a 17-year-old Austrian who used the outdoor shower in his accommodation was electrocuted. All help came too late for the youth.

According to the newspaper “Slobodna Dalmacija”, the incident took place Friday afternoon in the tourist resort of Zavala on the south side of the island of Hvar. The 17-year-old was showering in the property’s garden when he was electrocuted.

The rescue service was alerted, but when they arrived, the young man showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The teenager is said to have been on holiday on Hvar with his family. According to the Croatian newspaper, the accommodation would have been an older house. The outdoor shower where the 17-year-old died was used daily by tourists, was made of metal and there was no evidence that the sanitary facilities could pose a safety risk.

Power went out in the area after the incident. The Mayor of Jelsa Municipality, Nikša Peronja, expressed his deepest condolences to the family. An autopsy has been ordered and police are investigating.
